Submitted by Stella Morgan on November 10, 2009

Diabetes is an insidious ailment in today’s world due to faulty eating patterns and various other factors like lack of physical activity on account of the sedentary nature of most jobs. Diabetes may also be caused by environmental or hereditary factors. The physiology of the ailment is attributed to a lack of insulin hormone or a lack of sensitivity to insulin. The maqui berry is found in one of the most fertile areas of the world, Patagonia, which is located in the South American nation of Chile. The maqui berry is supposedly one of the best tasting foods in the world. It has the highest content of anti oxidants as compared to any other food and it can also be a potent weight loss supplement.

The maqui berry scores 27,600 for every 100 grams on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale and contain antioxidants like anthocyanins, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. The antioxidants present in the maqui berry not only avert the occurrence of ailments like cancer, heart diseases, liver or kidney damage, and arthritis, they also help relieve the symptoms of diabetes. The antioxidants present in the berry help in sanitizing the colon. They break the fecal remains and toxic debris in the colon and flush them out of the body.

This cleanses the intestines and stomach, thereby reducing obesity. Obesity, as we all know, is associated with a number of ailments, including diabetes. An obese individual has a greater number of fat cells in the body.

These fat cells secrete a novel protein called Pigment Epithelium Derived Factor (PEDF) which triggers a chain of events to cause diabetes (Type 2). When PEDF is released in the blood stream, it causes the liver and muscles to become less sensitive to the insulin hormone. In reaction to this condition, great amounts of the insulin hormone are secreted which leads to the overexertion of the pancreas.

This causes the pancreas to become dysfunctional with limited or no insulin production at all, leading to what is called diabetes. As such, obesity is critically linked to diabetes and the former must be controlled so as to avert the latter. Hence, it is very essential to fight obesity to control diabetes. The antioxidants in the maqui berry help control obesity and thereby diabetes. Other than protecting you from obesity and diabetes, the maqui berry serves a number of other functions. It is a great source of nutrition and has anti inflammatory properties to safeguard you from various infections and ailments.
