Prescription Dietary Foods for Natural Health and Wellness
Hi! What kind of prescription diet foods are you talking about? Are you referring to foods that are prescribed for those on diet for overall health? The diet for good health is based on certain factors, such as age, activity pattern, preferences, sex and dietary intake of the individual. Certain guidelines for a healthy diet remain the same and are listed below:
  • Choice of the right foods is important.

Eat a balanced diet and weight maintenance is important.
  • The foods from the basic five food group are preferred. Cereals form the base, followed by fruits and vegetables, animal and dairy foods, followed by sweets and fats respectively.
  • Fats and oils are used sparingly. Non stick cookware helps in reducing the intake of oil. Oil sprays are also a good alternative. Saturated fats are avoided. Oils are preferred to solid fats. Hydrogenated fats, such as vanaspathi are also abstained form in cooing.  Sunflower, safflower, groundnut, mustard and soya bean oil are used. Two or more oils are used for cooking purposes. This ensures the supplementation of the mutually deficient essential fatty acids.
  • Animal sources provide protein. Fish, egg, poultry and meat are helpful. Lean meat is preferred for red meat. Poultry is cooked devoid of the skin to avoid the hidden, invisible fat. Fish provides omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Dairy products provide calcium, vitamin D and protein. Skimmed milk or low fat dairy products are preferred.
  • Whole grains, cereals, pulses and legumes provide complex carbohydrates. They also provide a list of B complex vitamins.
  • Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, phytonutrients, antioxidants and minerals, in addition to fibre.
  • Adequate amount of drinking water is recommended for overall health. Regular exercise is of great help in combination with good and healthy food.
