Nutrition Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are essential for proper health. They are one of the major nutrients, essential for the body, in addition to protein and fats. About fifty five per cent of the daily calories are contributed by carbohydrates. Adequate amount of fat in the diet helps in the protection of the body from fat accumulation.

The healthiest form of carbohydrate, namely dietary fibre helps in various ways, namely enhanced bowel movement, prevention of complications, namely diabetes, atherosclerosis and so on.

Physical performance is improved by starch and sugars, which are readily available in food. Carbohydrates play a vital role in nutrition by helping in the texture, appearance and taste of the food, thereby contributing to variety in every meal.

Dietary fibre in the diet is not digested and is eliminated with the bowel, thereby preventing constipation, cancer and other complications. Breakdown of pectin and gums result in fermentation, thereby improving on the gut micro flora. Foods rich in fibre contribute to satiety, thereby reducing the calorie intake. Foods with low glycaemic index are helpful in providing satiety by eating in a slow manner. Weight reduction diets have complex carbohydrates, as an essential part of their diet. They provide high energy for athletes and helps in their endurance.
