Weight Gain with Hypothyroid

Weight gain is quite common in hypothyroid people. Some people who gain weight rapidly may not sometimes know that they are suffering from hypothyroidism. Hypothyroids may find it difficult to lose weight.

In normal condition whenever our body needs energy the hypothalamus sends hunger signals to the brain to have food especially carbohydrates. Once the hunger is satisfied, it is sensed by the hypothalamus that releases serotonin and thus we stop having food. This system is hampered in people with thyroid problems.

In their case the body metabolism is slowed down which can affect the appetite level set by the brain. Hence though the brain perceives the food intake as adequate, extra energy achieved is stored in the body as slower metabolism cannot match well with the excess intake. Apart from this, the brain signals are altered thus interfering with the serotonin levels and excess weight is gained.

Select low fat, low carbohydrates and protein sufficient diet. Avoid consumption of sugary foods, starchy foods, milk, desserts, meats and fruits with high sugar content. Go in for low starchy vegetables, legumes and cereal grains, chicken and turkey. Low intensity prolonged exercise can be useful. Go for brisk walks for 45 minutes daily.
