(May 25, 2010)

Eating protein in the right amount is essential for good health. We generally get the required quantity of proteins in the diet we consume. However, if you find that you are increasingly feel tired or your weight is not what you expect it to be, it’s time to keep a track of the amount of protein that you consume.

Proteins play a very important role in repairing the cells in our body, as well as the proper functioning of our body.  Your protein requirement depends on what your ideal body weight is. For an average adult male whose weight is 154 pounds, the protein requirement is approximately 56 grams per day.

On the other hand for an adult female with an average weight of 110 pounds, the daily requirement of protein is about 40 grams per day. If you are pregnant, your requirement will increase be an additional 20 to 30 grams. For every 2.2 pounds of body weight, the average protein requirement is 0.8 grams.

The simple way to figure out what your protein requirements are is take your ideal body weight in pounds and divide it by 2.2 to figure out what your weight in kilograms is. Then take this weight and multiply it by 0.8. The figure you get will help you determine the amount of protein you need to intake. Here’s an example. Let’s suppose your ideal weight is 121 pounds. Divide this figure by 2.2. This would give you 55 kilograms. Now multiply 55 kg by 0.8 and the result would be 44. Thus 44 grams is your daily requirement of protein. For those who lead a very active lifestyle, the protein requirement is a bit higher. This is also true in the case of people who are highly stressed out or those who work-out and lift weights. For those whose lifestyle is sedentary, the protein needs will be slightly lower.

Meat and eggs are good sources of protein. It’s a good idea to opt for healthy sources of meat such as turkey, chicken breast, or fish. Vegetarians should consume legumes and tofu to meet their daily protein requirements. You can also check out the protein bars and powders that are available in the market. They come in various flavors. The best way to figure out if your protein intake is right is to see how you feel. If you feel tired or too lethargic it could be that you need to up your protein needs.
