A diet chart for diabetic patient

Diabetes is a serious medical condition, which can cause a person’s body to stop the production or the proper use of insulin. This causes the levels of glucose in the blood to reach dangerously high levels. Therefore, it is only natural that people who are diabetic should follow a special diabetes diet chart, which does not contain foods that are sweet or contain sugar. A diet plan for diabetes patients can also be referred to as a sugar patient diet chart. The advantage of following a diet chart for a diabetic patient is that it helps people to avoid foods that can worsen the condition and at the same time, it can also help a person to stick to the number of calories that should be consumed in a day.

Given below are some of the different types of sugar patient diet chart that can be followed by a diabetic patient:

Medical diet for diabetics

A Medical Nutritional Therapy Diet (MNTD) for diabetes is a medically designed diet that includes a wide variety of food for diabetic patients. This diet is based on the principle that diabetic patients should not maintain a log time gap between two meals; instead they should consume frequent meals at regular intervals throughout the day. Ideally, they are required eat something every 2 or 3 hours, which means that at least 5 or 6 small meals should be consumed each day. However, the foods that are a part of this plan are generally high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, healthy carbs and good “fat”. Foods that should be completely eliminated from a diet chart for diabetic patients are saturated fats, sodium, cholesterol and trans fats.

Atkins diet for diabetics

This is one of the most popular diet plans, followed by people all across the world, because it has had several success stories. However, even though many people lost several pounds, by switching over to this diet, the original Atkins diet was not completely appropriate for diabetics. Therefore a new sugar patient diet chart was introduced. According to this plan, a person can follow any one of the 3 different levels of carbs consumption. Some of the other basics of this diet include:

• No restrictions how much fat or protein are consumed in a day
• Restricting the consumption of cheese to less than 4 ounces in the day
• Cutting down on the intake of low-fat dairy products,

Diabetes diet chart for vegetarian

Most diabetics are advised to turn towards vegetarianism, because most plant based foods are free from cholesterol. Moreover, diets that are vegetarian include a several variety of foods, which are high in nutrients, but low in fat. Nutrition experts claim that people who are diabetic can benefit greatly by eating a high amount of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and low fat dairy products.

Apart from following a sugar patient diet chart, most diabetics are required to exercise on a regular basis, not only because it helps them keep their weight in check, but because exercise is essential for controlling the levels of sugar in the body too. There are some people who may also practice special yoga poses that can keep the levels of sugar in the body under control, which in turn helps alleviate the symptoms of diabetes in a person. Some people may also need to take insulin injections to control the levels of sugar in their blood.

However, before making any dietary changes or even adding any new foods to a diet, it is absolutely essential to check with a doctor.

Diet chart for heart patient

A diet for heart patients usually refers to a special diet plan that has been designed mainly for people who have either suffered a heart attack, or have gone through a bypass surgery in the last couple of days. Planning a diet for a heart patient is not an easy task. This is because in most cases a heart patient diet chart needs to be followed on a long term or even a permanent basis. Therefore the diet chart for heart patients should not just include good food for the heart, but should also have fair quantities of other healthy, nutritious, but appetizing food.

Given below is a list of good food for heart patients:

• Fruits and veggies: There is almost no better source of vitamins and mineral, as compared to fresh fruits and vegetables. Alternately, some heart patients may also be allowed to consume canned or frozen vegetables and fruits. However, none of the foods should contain high amounts of salt, sugar and cream.
• Grains: Whole grains are high in fiber and other nutrients, which can work wonders for the good health of the heart. Some of the healthiest whole grain products include foods that are made out of wheat. Some of the most common whole grain foods include wheat bread, oatmeal, high fiber cereal, flaxseed, brown rice, whole grain pasta, barley and buckwheat. However, not all foods that contain grains and seeds are high in nutrition. Foods that should be avoided by heart patients are high fat snacks, white bread, muffins, egg noodles, pies, cakes, cookie and, butter popcorn, to name a few.
• Herbs and spices: People who suffer from heart problems are generally asked to reduce their consumption of salt. Hence, to make food more palatable, it is best to increase the amount of herbs and a few spices, so that their food remains healthy, yet tasty. However, there are several condiments that are very high in fat, sugar and salt, which are used in day to day cooking, to enhance the flavor of food. However, certain sauces like tomato ketchup and soy sauce should not be included in a heart patient’s diet.

However, before designing any diet for heart patients after surgery, it is important to consult a doctor. This should also be done in case of a diet for heart patients before surgery.  Apart from a diet, there are several other exercises that can help people regulate their heart health too. However, it is important to get a go ahead from the doctor, before engaging any of the exercises.

As per latest research and studies it has been observed that heart disease or cardiac disease is one of the leading killers of both women and men across the world. Heart patients are being treated for a variety of heart related problems which are known to affect the blood vessels and the heart. These diseases may include narrowed or blocked heart vessels, chest pain or strokes, abnormalities in the heart rhythm and even congenital heart defects. A diet for heart patients is one that also encourages the patient to make healthy lifestyle choices which includes plenty of exercise and metal relaxation besides the correct heart healthy nutritional intake.

The DASH diet or the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension is a diet for heart patients which primarily consist of a fiber rich eating plan for the heart patient along with reduction in the intake of sodium. The DASH diet chart for heart patients also includes an increase in the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as low-fat dairy products. The diet for heart patients will usually have two key components as part of the diet plan and that is high potassium intake and a low sodium intake. The intake of sodium is minimized as per a heart surgery patient diet or even for any other heart patient because it has been observed that an excessive consumption of salt tends to increase the volume of body fluids  which in turn impairs the body’s natural regulators of blood pressure. In fact doctors also recommend that the diet for heart patients should not include more than 2400mg of sodium on a daily basis which is almost equal to a teaspoon of salt per day. Hence the diet for heart patients would typically strictly avoid foods that are overly salty, processed foods etc such as fats foods, frozen pizzas, canned vegetables and so on.

A diet that is high in potassium and low in sodium is also good for heart patients as it tends to reduce the negative effects of adrenaline on the body whenever one is under stress. A diet for heat patients  is also one that is rich in fiber especially water soluble fiber rich foods such as oat bran as they are known to help lower ones blood pressure and cholesterol levels thereby aiding in the treatments as well as the prevention of various heart diseases. Some doctors may also put a heart patient on a soup diet which may either be the cabbage soup diet or the Sacred heart disease diet which is supposed to be an offset of the cabbage diet. The diet for heart patients in some cases may also be purely vegetarian as it has been observed that vegetarians tend to have a lower risk of cardiac diseases. This is mostly because a standard vegetarian diet tends to be rich in complex carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamins C and A which are all known to be highly effective in the prevention of various cardiac diseases and ailments. Heart patients are also advised to go for regular medical checkups.

Hepatitis B virus attacks the hub organ of our body that is the liver, which will lead to decreased liver functioning to a certain extent. Have a holistic approach and take special care as your father is also suffering from heart disease and diabetes. Along with the medications prescribed, also follow some simple measures like –

  • Take proper rest, don’t over-exert your self.
  • Regain your energy by including complex carbohydrates in the form of whole wheat and its products. Avoid refined (Refined flour based) products, junk foods, oily foods, and sugar in your diet.
  • Include moderate amount of proteins in the form of dals, legumes and pulses because high proteins can cause further liver damage.
  • As fat absorption is hindered due to decreased bile secretion and absorption, decrease overall consumption of fats and oils and include MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) like butter, cream, coconut oil while preparing food as they are rapidly absorbed from the intestine and poses less stress on the liver.
  • Soak 15g fenugreek seeds in ½ cup water in the night. Have these seeds with water in the morning on an empty stomach before breakfast. Similarly soak another 15g fenugreek seeds in the morning and have it in the evening 30 minutes before dinner. The soluble fiber in fenugreek seeds helps to manage the blood glucose levels.
  • If you have cravings for sweet go for fruits. Fruit is a sweet way to satisfy your sweet taste buds. But remember to avoid fruit juices and have whole fruits preferably with skin.
  • Avoid the consumption of alcohol completely, if you consume it.
  • If he can perform simple exercises, encourage him to do so and be physically active as this will help his condition in all terms.
