Fruit Juice For Diabetes - Type 1 & 2
Most of the doctors would not recommend fruit juice for diabetics. Since fruit juices are rich in fructose and can immediately spike up your blood sugar levels, they can be harmful for diabetics. For this reason, diabetics should ideally consume very small amounts of fruit juices, if any. Some juices may be absorbed by the body much quicker than others, causing an instant spike in blood sugar levels. This would be dangerous for those who have high blood sugar.
Type 1 Diabetes:
You can consume fruit juice for type 1 diabetes. However, the juice should only be a part of a well-rounded diabetes diet, and the amount of fruit juice you consume should be based on the recommendations of a dietician or a physician. All juices contain carbohydrates. While some of these juices have more carbohydrates, others have less of it. There are a lot of different factors that affect the impact of fruit juice on your diabetes. Generally, 4 oz. is considered to be one serving, and this is the recommended portion of fruit that you should consume every day when you have diabetes. Try and consume only one portion of fruit juice every day, but do not consume it on an empty stomach as this can cause a higher spike in the blood sugar levels. It is also important to consume fruit juice only with pulp. Cloudy juices, which contain the original pulp from the fruit, are ideal for consumption during diabetes. Avoid consuming juices that contain added sugars and concentrates.
Type 2 Diabetes:
Just like in type 1 diabetes, fruit juice in type 2 diabetes is also not usually recommended. When consuming fruit juices, you should always exercise some caution. If you have filtered juices, add fiber into it so that the conversion into blood sugar is slower. If you squeeze your juice fresh, do not filter it and allow the pulp to remain. Some of the best juices to consume if you have type 2 diabetes include tomato juice, raw carrot juice, lime juice, and lemonade. Do not add sugars to these juices. If you want the juices to be sweeter, you can simply add some artificial sweeteners to it. For those who have type 2 diabetes, the ideal time to consume fruit juice is immediately after you have exercised. Exercising can bring about a drop in the blood sugar levels. However, if you consume fruit juice immediately after you exercise, you can normalize your blood sugar levels without really getting a temporary spike. Your doctor will tell you how to plan the consumption of fruit juice in relation to your medications. It is important to keep this in mind because this can help you prevent major fluctuations in your blood sugar levels.
