French Breakfast Menu

A french breakfast is usually light and incorporates foods such as fluffy pastries and sweets in small portion sizes. The typical french breakfast rarely consist of sausages and eggs. French breakfast recipes also do not contain any savory foods. One of the most popular french breakfast foods is croissants. These crescent sweet pastry rolls originated in Austria but went on to become part of French cuisine.

Croissants:

There are two types of croissants, croissant nature and butter croissant or croissant au beurre.

Croissants may be eaten in a variety of ways such as with jam or stuffed with fillings of chicken and cheese. They may also be eaten plain along with a cup of steaming coffee. It is important to remember that they are high in calorie content. Each croissant carries about 125 to 150 calories.

French Bread Or Baguettes:

Another important item in the french breakfast menu is the baguette or French bread. It is a light bread that comes in the shape of a long loaf. Baguettes must be eaten fresh as they tend to go stale after a few hours. The bread is made using flour, water and yeast. Today baguettes are also made with whole wheat, milk, sugar, sourdough and rye. At breakfast, baguettes may be eaten with jams or butter. There are also some other types of French bread such as brioche and pain au noix (bread with nuts). View this recipe for French Bread Baguette

French Toast:

French toast is a popular breakfast dish not just in France, but in other parts of the world as well. To make French toast, bread slices are dipped in a mixture of egg and milk. The slices are then cooked on a griddle until they become brown. In a french toast breakfast, one can serve various toppings such as honey, maple syrup, jam, marmalade and even gravy.

Beverages:

Beverages, whether hot or cold, also form an important part of a French breakfast. But fresh orange juice and hot chocolate are also popular. Café au lait is generally the morning coffee and is made with coffee and hot milk. French coffee beans are rich in flavor and aroma and therefore just a small amount of coffee is enough to begin the day. Hot chocolate is prepared in a very different manner in France. Instead of using pre-sweetened hot chocolate, the French melt chocolate in hot milk. This gives the drink a rich chocolate flavor. Most people in France do not drink milk or tea with their breakfast.
