Cholesterol Lowering Diet and Food Guide for Diabetes

I am diagnosed with high levels of uric acid, cholesterol, kidney stone and diabetes is high by 30 points. What food veg and non-veg can I eat to bring these levels down? Please provide me information urgently.

Your concerns are valid. However sustained efforts to bring about dietary and lifestyle modification can help you in bringing down the levels. High levels of uric acid in your body can lead to a condition called hyperuricemia.
In such a condition; you may be susceptible to the development of gout where your body can form crystals that may accumulate in your joints. You can have a low purine diet for lowering the levels of uric acid in the body. As there is a high level of uric acid in the urine, uric acid stones are formed in the kidney. Apart from high uric acid, high concentration of stone forming salts like calcium phosphate, calcium oxalate and struvite can form crystals and grow into a stone.

High cholesterol and high triglyceride levels in the blood are related to high blood sugar levels. Even improper nutrition, low protein and fiber with high intake of refined foods are the main culprits of diabetes.

Certain dietary modifications essential for lowering the levels to normal are:
  • Maintain an ideal body weight. This is essential for maintaining optimum cholesterol and blood sugar levels. If you reduce your weight to maintain an ideal body weight, it can also help in lowering the levels of uric acid in the body.
  • Have fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have valuable nutrients and contain phytochemicals that can help in lowering the cholesterol levels and have antioxidant activity that prevents the damage of body cells due to oxidation. Avoid potatoes and bananas which are high in starch content that can raise the blood glucose levels. Leafy vegetables are rich in oxalates. You need to reduce this in order to lower oxalate in the urine and reduce the incidence of stone formation. Green vegetables and tomatoes, fruits and fresh fruit juice are low in purine and can be helpful to reduce uric acid level.
  • Prefer unsaturated fats to saturated fats. If you are having animal foods, cheese, high fat milk in higher amounts then you can have high cholesterol levels. Avoid hydrogenated fats, cakes, cookies, fried foods and margarine as these are rich in trans fats. These fats can increase the cholesterol levels. Apart from this, beef, bacon, pork, and lamb are also rich in purines; this can increase the uric acid level. A diet low in animal protein is essential for lowering uric acid stone formation. You can prefer vegetable oils that contain unsaturated fats as well as essential fats. Omega 3 fats contain eicosa pentanoic acid (EPA) that can reduce the levels of cholesterol and uric acid and improve blood glucose levels. However restrict the intake of seafoods as they are rich in purines.
  • You need to reduce the intake of dairy products as they are rich in calcium and increase the susceptibility to stone formation.
  • Choose high fiber foods like whole grain barley, whole wheat, brown rice and whole rye. These foods are beneficial for lowering the cholesterol and don’t raise blood sugar levels drastically. Fiber can also bind with calcium and can help in reducing the incidence of calcium stone formation. Fiber is also essential for improving the levels of inhibitory factors of kidney stones.
