Advice on irregular menses

Irregular Menses

A regular period takes place between cycles that runs from month to month. This cycle differs for each woman. While common cycles occur every 25 to 29 days, it is not uncommon to find regular cycles of 23 to 29 day timeframes. An irregular cycle is one that doesn’t confirm to a cycle. Periods in this case are erratic occurring once in two to three months.

Conversely, if a woman experiences two or more cycles within a month, this is considered as an example of irregular menses as well.

Reason for Irregular Periods

There are a number of reasons for irregular periods. These range from lifestyle problems like stress, excess weight gain or excess exercise, poor eating habits, substance abuse, or it could be because of an underlying medical condition like a hormonal imbalance or formation of cysts in the uterus, and so on. Irregular periods can also be a result of ongoing medical treatment like chemotherapy or post pregnancy. The most common cause of irregular menses is hormonal imbalance. Again this hormonal imbalance may be because of stress, pregnancy, surgery, side effects of medication (this includes birth control pills) or an underlying medical condition like an imbalance with the thyroid gland. Depending on what is causing the irregular periods, you will be prescribed treatment for irregular periods.

Treatment for Irregular Periods

If you are experiencing irregular menses it is best to consult a gynecologist to figure out the cause. Once you know what the problem is, treatment for irregular periods can start.

There are generally three approaches to dealing with irregular menstrual cycles:
• Medical Treatments – If your irregular periods are diagnosed to be a result of an underlying condition, treatment for irregular menses includes medication and in some cases even surgery. The most common diagnosis is thyroid disorder. The condition is corrected with appropriate hormonal supplements and lifestyle guidelines. Irregular periods can also occur due to the contraceptives being used. Consult your doctor to settle on a treatment for irregular periods that tackles the root cause of the problem.
• Lifestyle Changes – The easiest solution or treatment for irregular menses is generally making positive lifestyle changes. Simple measures like eating healthy, cutting down on cigarettes and alcohol, exercising regularly and curbing stress can make a great amount of difference. It also helps to practice holistic body mind exercises like yoga.
• Herbal Cures – If you are looking for natural solutions to irregular periods, herbs are said to be useful. Many herbs have medicinal properties that help correct body functions naturally. They are safe to ingest and do not cause side effects. Herbs that can help deal with irregular periods include parsley and ginger. Include as much of these in your diet to enable your body to correct any internal imbalance.

Irregular Periods Advice

Irregular periods can be caused due to different reasons like stress, poor nutrition, sudden weight loss, excessive exercise, anorexia nervosa and the most common hormonal disturbances in women.  If you have already been told that irregularity in your periods is due to certain hormonal imbalances then to correct them is important. For example a thyroid hormone imbalance can cause menstrual irregularities when the amount of thyroid hormone is the blood is too low or high. Try the following simple tips to regularize your menstrual flow -

  • Avoid any sudden weight changes. Eating disorders like anorexia or low nutrient stores in the body can cause irregular periods. So have a well balanced diet with whole cereals and grains, pulses, dairy products, eggs, fish, lean meat and poultry, not to forget plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid any kind of stress as far as possible as the main cause of irregular periods is stress (fear, depression, a family holiday, stress at work, relationship stress). Get moderate regular exercise as exercise like a light jog or meditation is a good way to burn the stress levels in the body.
  • To regularize your periods drink a glass of fresh carrot juice daily on regular basis for 3 months.
  • Asafetida, fenugreek seeds, sesame seeds and ginger also help to regularize the periods, liberally include them in your meals while cooking.
