Advice on Diabetes Medication

Diabetes medications are required, in case of non-achievement of the normal blood sugar with exercise and diet. Uncontrolled diabetes calls for medical attention, as neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy and other complications are common. Medicines or oral hypoglycaemic drugs are helpful in achieving the normal levels of blood glucose. The kind of medicines taken depends on the type of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also referred to as insulin dependent diabetes, and is seen in children, adolescents and adults, due to improper secretion of insulin.

Medicines that work in coordination with insulin are taken under medical supervision.

Insulin resistance results in type 2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The most common pill recommended is metformin. It is seen in adults. Gestational diabetes is seen in pregnant women. Strict exercise and diet helps in controlling the situation, though insulin is needed in certain cases.

Diabetes medicines are available in various forms, namely insulin pump, insulin jet injector and injections. An insulin pen is helpful in giving self injections. Insulin pump is a kind of pump which injects insulin ate regular intervals. A single pill is administered, failure of which calls for two to three pills at the same time, with or without insulin. The side effects of the medicines taken are necessarily known.
