Rheumatoid Arthritis Diet

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disorder, which usually affects the small joints in a person’s feet and hands. It affects the lining of the joints and can cause a painful swelling which can further lead to joint deformity and bone erosion. This chronic condition occurs when the immune system attacks the tissues of the body. This ailment usually affects people over the age of 40 and is more common in women, than men. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis and therefore it is recommended that a patient follow a rheumatoid arthritis diet, to avoid foods that can aggravate the condition. A rheumatoid arthritis diet not only reduces the pain, but can also prevent the disabilities usually associated with this condition.

You can maximize the effects of rheumatoid arthritis your diet by including a lot of cold water fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring, and halibut. The Omega 3 fatty acids present in them are known to reduce inflammation. Foods like sunflower seeds, shrimp, and eggs are also important as they are high in Vitamin D. Fresh fruits and vegetables are absolutely essential too, as they contain vitamins and minerals which strengthen the body.

Foods that should not be included in a rheumatoid arthritis diet are meats that are high in fat and saturated fats like hydrogenated oils. In case you are allergic to wheat or dairy products, you should avoid them too as they could worsen the condition. However, it is not recommended that you eliminate large numbers of food or complete food groups without consulting a doctor or a dietician.
