Stomatitis Diet

Stomatitis can be described as an inflammation that affects the mucus membranes of a person’s mouth. This affliction is characterized by the formation of blisters and lesions on the oral cavity. These blisters could appear on the tongue, or the inner cheeks. There are many different factors that could cause a person to suffer from stomatitis, the most common one being exposure to the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). Other factors that could also lead to this condition include lack of adequate dental hygiene, trauma to the membrane tissues and dentures that do not fit properly.

Very often people could suffer from stomatitis, after consuming foods and beverages that are excessively hot. Allergic reactions, which are major contributors to oral irritation and the development of blisters, could also cause stomatitis. Many people could suffer from non-infectious stomatitis, due to the regular consumption of certain medication. One of the other common factors that could lead to stomatitis is the frequent indigestion or following a poor diet on a regular basis. Fortunately, it is possible to treat this condition, using various methods. Apart from proper dental hygiene and the use of simple home remedies to treat this condition, people are also advised to follow a healthy diet.

Since stomatitis could be a result of the collection of toxins in the body, for long term relief from this condition, it is important for people to follow a diet that is high in healthy stomatitis foods. However, in the beginning, a stomatitis diet requires the patient to consume nothing but water and orange juice for around 3 to 4 days. For best results, the orange juice should be diluted in an equal part of warm water, before it is consumed. This mixture should be consumed every two hours or so, so that the body does not suffer from a lack of nutrition. For those people who do not like orange juice, carrot juice diluted in water should be used instead. However, people may need to take a warm water enema to cleanse the bowels during this phase. In case the patient is a child, a suppository can be used instead of an enema.

After the duration of 3 to 4 days, people can switch over to a diet, comprising healthy stomatitis foods to eat, such as fresh fruits like peach, pear, grapefruit, apple, papaya, pineapples, oranges and grapes. After that, the patient needs to follow a stomatitis diet that mainly comprises fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. Special emphasis should be laid on whole grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables that are either raw or cooked lightly. Sprouted seeds like green gram beans and alfalfa are also healthy stomatitis foods to eat.

There are certain stomatitis foods that should be strictly avoided too, such as candies, processed food, pickles, ice cream, soft drinks, refined foods, meat, coffee, tea, white flour, sugar and condiments. However, before adding any foods to a regular diet, or eliminating any, it is absolutely essential to consult a doctor and get an approval.

Stomatitis Home Remedies

In most instances, people do not need to go through a stomatitis cure, as the condition normally gets resolved on its own, within a week or so. However, the symptoms of this condition can be quite painful, which is why people may decide to go in for treatment, which mainly comprises stomatitis home remedies. There are different types of stomatitis and the treatment for each type may vary. For example, aphthous stomatitis treatment may be slightly different from angular stomatitis treatment and denture stomatitis treatment.

Aphthous Stomatitis Treatment

The treatment for this affliction depends on the severity of the lesions. There are several topical products, which combine mucosal binding agents with typical steroids that can be used. For the pain and the discomfort, topical anesthetics may also be recommended.

Angular Stomatitis Treatment

The medication that is usually prescribed in angular stomatitis treatment is hydrocortisone (1%), along with other creams and gels. Additionally, people are advised to use certain angular stomatitis home remedies to get rid of any bacteria or fungus and to keep the membrane moisturized.

Denture Stomatitis Treatment

The first step in the treatment of denture stomatitis is removal of dentures every night and ensuring that they are cleaned every single day. In addition to that oral mouth rinses, like hexetidine can be helpful.

Most people prefer to use stomatitis natural remedies, as there are fewer risks of side effects associated with them. Some of the most commonly recommended stomatitis natural remedies include:

  • Taking one tablespoon of lemon juice before each meal
  • Gargling a few times in the day, using a solution made from lemon juice & water
  • Using a mild mouthwash, with a teaspoon of salt and baking soda each

Stomatitis treatment in children may vary, as the home remedies and medication for them may be different as compared to adults. Therefore, it is important for people to ensure that they consult a doctor before using any form of treatment for children.
