Cure Diarrhea with Herbs

The World Health Organization has recently stated that allopathic drugs should not be used for the treatment of diarrhea due to harmful side effects that they cause. Instead it recommends administering Oral Rehydration Solution to replace the fluids and salts which are lost as a result of diarrhea. However, this may not be enough to adequately treat acute cases of diarrhea, and it is imperative that an effective side medication with minimum side effects be found.

The answer to this quest perhaps lies in the traditional medical systems of many countries. In the jungles of Myanmar, the indigenous people use the leaves of the plant Mashaw (Euonymous kachinensis) to treat diarrhea.
In India, the fruit of the Bael tree (Aegle mannalos) is used to treat this condition. For treating children, the roots of the Cyperus rotundus mixed with honey, are used. In Thailand, the dried resin of the plant Acacia catechu is used traditionally for the treatment of diarrhea. Other indigenous plants that are used for the treatment of diarrhea include the Acacia catechu, the Terminalia chebula, Piper nigrum and the Eclipta prostate.

These traditional herbal medications are obviously effective; otherwise they would not have been handed down through centuries. Modern medical science now needs to assess the effectiveness of these traditional remedies through controlled clinical trials and then use them to synthesize effective drugs for combating diarrhea.
