(May 13, 2010)

Tea is possibly the most common drink that people around the world consume and most people are partial to it because it is very refreshing. Thus, you will find that people the world over prefer to have tea with their breakfast. Tea is derived from the Camellia Sinensis plant and though there are different types of tea that are available, they all come from this very plant. What makes it different is the way it is processed. The famous varieties of tea are black tea, green tea, herbal tea, oolong tea and so on.

Green tea is extremely beneficial for a good health and the usefulness of green tea has been long known to ancient Chinese people and was used by them for medicinal purposes and used in treating headaches and mental disorders like depression.

Green tea acquires greater importance because of the way it is made. Where most teas are oxidized, green tea is steamed and also contains a lesser amount of caffeine as compared to black tea. Green tea has a lot of health benefits as it helps in prevention of esophageal cancer, cardiovascular diseases, reduces risk of thrombosis, helps in lowering cholesterol levels in the body and also multiple sclerosis can be treated by green tea. A secret property that this tea contains is catechin polyphenols better known as epigalloccatechin gallate (ECGC) which is a very strong antioxidant that not only stops the growth of cancer cells but is also believed to kill these cells without causing any harm to the healthy tissues.

You can mix green tea with your normal tea but after knowing the amount of benefits that green tea has, it is recommended that for best results, you have green tea as it is without mixing it with anything else as this might reduce the effects of the tea. In fact green tea is preferred over normal tea by many as it is relatively richer in antioxidants because of the way it is prepared and has about 30 mg of caffeine where on the other hand, normal tea (black or red) contains around 50 mg of caffeine. Another reason why green tea is considered over normal tea is because normal tea is prepared by fermenting the tea leaves and it is this that gives the tea its black color where as green tea is processed slightly because of which the ECGC compound that is present in it does not get oxidized.
