Stomatitis Causes And Symptoms In Adults And Children

Stomatitis is a rather common non-specific term for an inflammation that occurs in any of the structures within the human mouth. The condition can be divided into a number of categories – with some of the more common ones being the development of canker sores, mouth irritation and cold sores or fever blisters. Angular stomatitis, however, is primarily a skin condition that tends to be more frequent in cold conditions such as the winter months. This condition is known to affect anyone at anytime, but it is most commonly seen in the elderly, primarily as a result of the increased number of skin folds that they have around the area. Angular stomatitis treatment is focused on repairing the damaged tissue around the corners of the mouth.
Denture stomatitis treatment will revolve around properly identifying the sub type of the condition that has developed. There are three types of denture stomatitis – type 1, which is a simple localized inflammation around the mouth while type II is a generalized type that develops around the entire denture covered area and then we have type III, which is an inflammation that develops over the hard palate and alveolar ridges. Because of the fact that stomatitis is a very common condition, there are a number of herpes stomatitis treatments, viral stomatitis treatments as well as aphthous stomatitis treatments that can be found through a number of sources such as the internet as well as your local doctor or even bookstore.

Stomatitis In Children

Given the fact that most children do not understand the importance of oral healthcare right up until they have developed a toothache, cases of herpetic stomatitis in children as well as viral stomatitis in children and gingivitis stomatitis in children are very common occurrences. As mentioned previously, the term stomatitis is merely an indication that an inflammation has developed within the oral cavity, while the preceding term will generally identify the primary cause. Understanding the various causes of stomatitis in children is a very important part of treating the condition properly. For instance, when dealing with angular stomatitis, it helps to be aware of the fact that the primary cause of the development of sores at the sides of the mouth is a deficiency in iron or vitamin B-2, vitamin B-3 or vitamin B-12. Any factors that cause saliva to accumulate in the corners of the mouth will allow an infection to develop or a virus to grow. This would result in the development of stomatitis in children as well as adults. Combining this example with the case of denture stomatitis, individuals whose dentures do not fit properly will very often suffer from a development of the condition. This is because of the fact that the saliva that tends to collect in the gaps between the denture and the plate of the mouth allow any infections or viruses to get a foothold in the mouth thus resulting in stomatitis. In most cases, any of the cases of stomatitis are likely to be acute, with the inflammation only occurring in instances where the causing infection has been irritated.

Stomatitis Symptoms

The stomatitis symptoms in adults and children will depend heavily on the type of stomatitis that the individual is suffering from. For instance, aphthous stomatitis symptoms will include the development of a recurring ulcer inside the lip, ulcers on the tongue as well as ulcers in the inside cheek. The viral stomatitis symptoms, on the other hand - will depend largely on the type of virus that has affected the system.  In most cases, the symptoms will revolve around swollen gums, pain in the mouth, drooling, difficulty in swallowing, a significant decrease in the appetite of the patient as well as irritability in addition to the development of the many ulcers within the mouth. The more common angular stomatitis symptoms include substantial discomfort and even pain when it comes to eating, swallowing or simply talking. The pain that the patient is likely to experience at this time is the reopening of the sores present in the mouth. Because of the fact that these sores are now open – they are very susceptible to infection

Stomatitis Causes

Identifying the causes of the various types of conditions will play a huge role in helping you choose the right treatment option. The angular stomatitis causes are of two types – although they are caused by the same fungi. In order to identify whether you are suffering from the fungal type of infection or the yeast infection, it is important to have your doctor conduct a blood test. This blood test would be important as a treatment plan could be suggested only when the cause has been identified. Angular stomatitis causes as well as other types of stomatitis may be caused by factors such as indigestion or defective functioning of the stomach. Poor oral hygiene is something that also plays a very key role in the development of the condition.
