Gingivitis Treatment

Please suggest a healthy diet for treatment of gingivitis. What food can be taken when suffering from the ailment of bleeding gums
(March 18, 2009)

The word gingivitis brings a horrible feeling to your mouth. After all it is a common dental disease, which is caused due to inflammation and bleeding of the gums. Gingivitis can be cured; however one needs to maintain oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth well and eating the right food.

You need to understand that like all other body parts, the gums also require special care and nutrients to function normally.

Gingivitis is caused due to a build up of bacteria on the gums. This is due to lack of cleaning or flossing the teeth. Over time the bacteria sticks to the gums and teeth and becomes hard, which causes serious damage to the teeth and gums. The best procedure is to get rid of all the tartar and bacteria from the teeth and gums. This is usually done by any dentist. However, the important thing to remember is to avoid the buildup of bacteria again. This can only be done if you undertake the following steps.

Firstly, eat lots of fiber. Fiber helps in getting rid of the bacteria which causes Gingivitis, Therefore supplement your meals with a good amount of fiber. Foods which include high amounts of fiber are vegetables and fruits. You can also eat lots of whole grains and beans, which contain large amounts of fibers to improve your condition.

Vitamins and minerals are a must for your body as deficiency of these nutrients can cause frequent bleeding of the gums. Vitamin B and C help in fighting the bacteria stuck to your gums and teeth and also prevents bleeding. Minerals such as potassium, iron, magnesium and zinc help in building stronger gums and promote better dental health.

Lastly remember, if you have a sweet tooth, now is the time to restrain yourself from eating something sugary, as sweet food is a breeding haven for bacteria. This helps in aggravating the infection at a rapid pace. So if you are prone to Gingivitis please avoid sweets for sometime or make sure to have only small quantities.

Gingivitis can really be a painful experience. The continuous bleeding and soreness of the mouth creates a lot of discomfort.  One can also experience side effects like bad breath and dryness of the mouth. Remember the simplest formula to avoid the dentist is to maintain proper oral hygiene and eat nutritious food to keep your gums and teeth healthy.
